Iran: Israeli Attacks on Peaceful Biological Facilities Threaten Global Security

According to Saed News citing IRNA, Heydarali Baloji, Director for Disarmament and Arms Control at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Republic of Iran, speaking on Monday, August 11, 2025, at the meeting of the Working Group on Strengthening the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), welcomed the accession of two new members to the treaty and stressed the importance of its universality, particularly in the Middle East. He strongly condemned the recent Israeli attacks on Iran’s peaceful biological and public health facilities.

Heydarali Baloji

Baloji referred to the aggressive, direct, and deliberate assaults by the Israeli regime on vaccine production, pharmaceutical, health, and other similar facilities in Iran. He described these actions as a blatant violation of international law and the fundamental principles of the Convention, warning that such attacks not only damage national public health capacities but also jeopardize regional and global biosecurity.

He emphasized that attacking peaceful biological facilities infringes upon the fundamental rights of States Parties to benefit from the peaceful use of biological sciences and undermines the entire global disarmament regime. The Iranian representative also called on the international community to firmly condemn these actions and hold those responsible accountable.

The Working Group on Strengthening the Biological Weapons Convention was established by the decision of the Ninth Review Conference of the Convention in 2022, with the aim of reinforcing it in various aspects, including international cooperation and assistance, reviewing scientific and technological developments relevant to the Convention, and verifying its provisions. Its mandate will continue until the end of 2026.
