Uruguay Closes Its Office in Occupied Quds in Solidarity With Gaza

The Uruguayan government has decided to suspend the cooperation agreement signed in December 2024 between Uruguay’s National Agency for Research and Innovation and an Israeli university in occupied Quds (Jerusalem) and to close its Innovation Office in Jerusalem to show solidarity with the Gazans.

According to Palestinian news agency Ma’an, Uruguayan Foreign Minister Mario Lubetkin cited recent developments in the Middle East and the Israeli army’s actions in Gaza as reasons for the decision.

The Uruguayan cabinet condemned Israel’s occupation of Gaza City as a violation of international law.

In response, the Israeli Embassy in Montevideo expressed regret, attributing the suspension to political disagreements.

Uruguay’s actions follow Israel’s decision to seize full control over Gaza, a campaign some reports say targeted the civilian population.

Last Tuesday, approximately 24 Western countries called for unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza, and some, including Britain, Spain, Australia, France, Canada, Luxembourg, Portugal, and Ireland, announced plans to recognize Palestine at the upcoming UN General Assembly in New York.
