The formation appeared to have a face, complete with eyes and a nose. More than 30 years later, the “Face on Mars” continues to inspire myths and conspiracy theories, with many people believing it to be an artificial structure built by an ancient Martian civilization.

From certain angles, shadows on the mountain make it strikingly face-like. However, images taken from different perspectives by the Mars Express orbiter and other spacecraft reveal that the formation bears no resemblance to a face at all.
