SAEDNEWS: Abbas Araqchi, the new foreign minister of Iran, unveiled conditional plans to manage tensions with the US and rebuild ties with the European countries.
According to SAEDNEWS, In his first interview with a foreign news agency since receiving a vote of confidence from the Parliament and assuming the role of Foreign Minister, Mohammad Javad Araqchi spoke with Japan’s Kyodo News on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of strengthening ties between Tehran and Tokyo.
Araqchi expressed his commitment to enhancing bilateral relations across various sectors, guided by a comprehensive roadmap informed by his extensive knowledge of Japan. He stated, “I know the capacity and capabilities of Japan. Japan can be more important in Iran's energy, oil, and economy section,” highlighting his intent to foster collaboration in these crucial areas.
The Foreign Minister welcomed Japanese companies interested in engaging in Iran's oil and energy sectors, indicating a desire for Japan to return to Iran's oil fields to help boost production. “We anticipate that this collaboration will continue to flourish on a path of fruitful cooperation,” he noted.
Regarding Iran's strategic approach, Araqchi revealed that fostering relations with East Asia has become a key foreign policy objective under the new government, underscoring “Japan's prominent position” in this initiative. Despite the challenges posed by US sanctions, he maintained the need to explore new avenues for economic cooperation.
In addressing the path forward, Araqchi stated, “We must transcend obstacles hindering our mutual interests and prioritize our vital needs. By comprehensively evaluating the current landscape, we can forge a constructive partnership to drive both nations' progress and prosperity.” He reiterated the significant bond of friendship and mutual understanding that characterizes Iran and Japan's relationship, emphasizing their potential to collectively tackle regional and global challenges.
“There's always a space for contributing initiatives,” he added, referencing Japan's past endeavors to reduce tensions between Tehran and Washington.
Lastly, the Foreign Minister detailed Iran's strategy for managing relations with the US and rebuilding ties with European countries, contingent on a shift away from a "hostile approach." He reinforced that the primary goal remains the lifting of sanctions to facilitate a return to normal trade relations within the international community. “In my foreign policy address to the Islamic Consultative Assembly (Parliament), I highlighted the crucial objective of lifting sanctions, particularly unilateral ones, through earnest, focused, and time-bound negotiations while upholding the nation's fundamental principles,” Araqchi concluded.
