Fame Shortens the Lives of Stars!

A group of Australian researchers examined 1,000 obituaries published in The New York Times and found that actors, singers, professional athletes, and other public figures died at an average age of 77. By comparison, academics such as historians and economists had an average age at death of 82. The longest-lived groups were politicians and businesspeople, with an average age at death of 83.

The researchers aim to identify the reasons why celebrities tend to have shorter lifespans than other groups. Preliminary findings suggest that the hardships faced by stars in their youth and their constant pursuit of fame may contribute to reduced longevity. Previous studies by scientists at the University of Queensland had reached similar conclusions. Those studies also noted a higher prevalence of lung tumors among musicians compared to other groups.
