SAEDNEWS: One Dallas police officer is dead and two others are injured after responding to an officer in distress call.
According to SAEDNEWS, In a tragic turn of events, one Dallas police officer has been killed and two others injured during a shootout with a suspect, referred to by law enforcement as an execution. The incident occurred after officers responded to an officer in distress call late Thursday night.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, parked his car at the For Oak Cliff community center around 10 p.m. and approached Officer Darron Burks, who was sitting in his patrol car. According to Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia, Cobb-Bey began recording their conversation before pulling out a handgun and firing at Burks.
“Cobb-Bey approached officer Burks, talked with him briefly through the driver’s side window as he recorded the encounter with a cell phone. The suspect then pulled out a handgun and executed officer Burks as he sat in his vehicle,” Garcia stated during a news conference. He emphasized, “I know that the word ambush has been thrown around... That is not what happened here. Officer Burks was executed.”
An officer-in-distress call was issued shortly after the attack when a dispatcher noticed an unusual transmission from Burks’ radio. Officers were dispatched to locate him, and upon arrival, they found Burks wounded in his car.
After shooting Burks, Cobb-Bey reportedly retrieved a shotgun from Burks' squad car and fired upon the first responding officer, Jamie Farmer, who returned fire and retreated across the parking lot. During the exchange, Farmer was shot in the leg.
A second officer, Karissa David, arrived shortly after and was also shot in the face as she exited her vehicle. Both injured officers were transported to the hospital — Farmer has since been treated and released, while David remains in critical but stable condition.
The death of Officer Burks raises the number of law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty this year to at least 93, with 38 of those fatalities resulting from gunfire.
Following the incident, the suspect fled but was pursued by Dallas police. The chase ended in Lewisville, where Cobb-Bey was shot multiple times by officers and died at the scene.
Dallas Police are investigating the shooting, which they have deemed “premeditated” based on evidence collected from social media. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office has also been notified and is investigating.
During this somber time, the Dallas Police Department and city officials are seeking support and prayers for the fallen officer's family and the injured officers. Chief Garcia shared his grief in a post on social media, stating simply, “No words.”
In recognition of the tragedy, flags at all Dallas municipal facilities will be flown at half-staff, and interim city manager Kimberly Bizor Tolbert urged the community to come together in support of the Dallas Police Department. “The City of Dallas is a family… may God bless and keep them, and may God bless the City of Dallas,” she stated.
