SAEDNEWS: Us president, Joe Biden claimed that a ceasefire deal in Gaza would discourage Iran from retaliating against Israel for assassinating Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
According to SAEDNEWS, The assassination of Haniyeh, the former Political Bureau leader of Hamas, sent shockwaves through the region. Haniyeh was killed in Tehran on June 31, shortly after attending the inauguration of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. This loss has exacerbated tensions, prompting Iran to declare that it will seek “harsh punishment” against Israel in response to the attack.
In a show of military readiness, the United States has sent additional warships and submarines to the West Asia region to safeguard Israel from potential retaliation amid these developments.
U.S. President Joe Biden addressed reporters on Tuesday, acknowledging that the path to a ceasefire in Gaza has become “harder” in light of the recent events. However, he maintains a commitment to pursuing a peaceful resolution between Israel and Hamas, stating, “I am not giving up.” He emphasized the need to observe Iran’s actions and the potential implications of any attacks.
When asked if he believed Iran might restrain its retaliation if a ceasefire agreement is reached, Biden expressed cautious optimism, saying, “That is my expectation, but we will see.”
In a coordinated diplomatic effort, the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar have urged Israel and Hamas to engage in a critical round of discussions regarding a ceasefire and the exchange of prisoners, scheduled for Thursday in Doha. Notably, the American delegation to these talks is expected to be led by CIA Director Bill Burns, emphasizing the high-stakes nature of the talks.
