The art of Satchim weaving is another textile craft that is woven in Mazandaran. Stay with Saadnews to learn more about this art.
Satchim weaving is a type of rural and domestic handicraft found in the villages of Kelardasht (including the villages of Hassan Keif, Shekarkuh, and Kooh Par) in Mazandaran province, and its weavers are women. Satchim weaving is very similar to Jajim weaving, and it is likely that the name changed due to differences in dialect and speech. In the past, natural colors like red, blue, yellow, and green were used for weaving Satchim, but nowadays, they have been replaced by chemical colors.
History
In the past, newlywed brides were gifted a Satchim along with a white shawl to symbolize the brightness of their shared life and to deepen their connection with traditions. Satchim weaving, or Satchin weaving, represents the creativity, artistry, and aesthetic sense of the people of northern Iran, and it is one of the woven textiles of western Mazandaran that needs revival. While in the past the people of Mazandaran were famous worldwide for their Satchin, today this ancient handcrafted art is in danger of being forgotten due to a lack of planning, disorganization of artists, lack of support, neglect of advertising, and its limited practical use.
Art of Satchim Weaving
Satchim weaving resembles carpet weaving, and its designs are simple, striped, and feature colorful squares in the center. The pattern in this handicraft has no set design, and the motifs used are based on tradition and culture passed down orally from generation to generation. In the past, brides were gifted a Satchim along with a white shawl to brighten their married life and to strengthen their bond with tradition.
Weaving Method
For weaving Satchim, the softer wool from sheep in the spring is used, making it finer and more delicate than Jajim. The warp is 10 meters long and 40 centimeters wide, and after weaving, it is divided into five equal parts. To weave a Satchim with dimensions of 2 by 2 meters, it takes six days. The support for this art, which is deeply rooted in the traditions and customs of the people in the region, has diminished every year. The necessary tools for weaving Satchim include wooden planks, heddles, combs, bobbins, and shuttle. Satchim is used as bedding, a rug, and a cover.
