SAEDNEWS: For centuries, humans have reported seeing strange things on the surface of Mars.
According to the Society section of Saed News, citing Khabar Online, it all began in 1976 when NASA released an image of an intriguing mountain on Mars, captured by the Viking 1 spacecraft. The formation appeared to have a face, complete with eyes and a nose. More than 30 years later, the “Face on Mars” continues to inspire myths and conspiracy theories, with many people believing it to be an artificial structure built by an ancient Martian civilization.
From certain angles, shadows on the mountain make it strikingly face-like. However, images taken from different perspectives by the Mars Express orbiter and other spacecraft reveal that the formation bears no resemblance to a face at all.

The 1976 “Face on Mars” was only the beginning. With the launch of Google Mars in 2009—a program built from satellite imagery of the Red Planet—users could explore the surface and discover various interesting formations and protrusions. One such find, discovered by an Italian man named Matteo Ianeo, bore a startling resemblance to Mahatma Gandhi.
Higher-resolution images show that this “face” is not a mountain or hill but actually a crater, which somewhat resembles a human head. Yet features that initially looked like eyes and eyebrows in Google Mars imagery are far less pronounced.
The “Mahatma Gandhi Face” on Mars illustrates how our brains are wired to find patterns and familiar shapes—even on another planet.
