As he prepares for his third consecutive appearance at the Paralympics in Paris, his journey from a challenging childhood to becoming a Paralympic champion captivates many.

How It All Started

Morteza's story is a testament to the power of chance. It all began in 2011 when Iran's national sitting volleyball coach, Hadi Rezaei, stumbled upon a television program featuring Mehrzad, who had been previously overlooked in sports. Intrigued by the giant on the screen, Rezaei wasted no time in reaching out to Mehrzad, leading to a life-changing conversation that would transform the latter's destiny. Morteza, who struggled with self-esteem and had faced significant life challenges, found his spirit ignited by the sport.

At just 15 years old, Mehrzad's life had taken a dark turn following a bicycle accident that severely injured his pelvis, leaving him with a significant height discrepancy between his legs. This led to years of depression and reliance on mobility aids. But everything changed when he introduced himself to sitting volleyball. “Playing sitting volleyball helped me a lot,” Mehrzad has often expressed, highlighting the positive transformation the sport provided.

Climbing the Ranks

His journey into professional sitting volleyball began when he joined Iran's national team in 2016. With exemplary performances, he quickly emerged as a star player at the Rio Paralympics, where he helped his team secure the gold medal. He continued this impressive streak with another gold medal at the Tokyo 2020 Games, solidifying his status as one of the top athletes in the sport.

Yet, Mehrzad is more than just a key player; he embodies the spirit of Iran's sitting volleyball team. Under the mentorship of Coach Rezaei, he has become a pivotal figure, leading the squad through numerous successful campaigns. Iran has historically excelled in sitting volleyball, having claimed gold medals in seven of the nine Paralympic appearances since 1988.

Facing New Challenges

As the Paris Paralympics approach, Mehrzad remains grounded and realistic. He acknowledges the formidable opponents they will face, especially Bosnia, but he also respects teams like Brazil, Germany, and Egypt. "Our main rival is Bosnia... but we must not underestimate Brazil, Germany, and Egypt," he notes, emphasizing the competitive spirit within the Paralympic community.

Despite the pressures and expectations, Mehrzad maintains a positive outlook, stating, "The morale of the team is very high." His belief in teamwork is evident, as he often downplays his achievements, stating, "Each of our guys is the best... and we make the best team in the world."

More Than an Athlete

Mehrzad's life experiences have not been without personal tragedy; he faced the painful loss of his mother in 2019. However, he credits sitting volleyball with helping him cope and move on from his grief. "It was and still is painful... but volleyball helped me a lot, not to forget, but to move past it," he reflects, showcasing the healing power of sports.

His presence in the sport has made him a role model, inspiring countless individuals, especially those with disabilities. Iranian media often refer to him as a "fatal weapon" and "the kind giant," highlighting both his physicality and his gentle demeanor.

The Road Ahead

As Mehrzad gears up for the Paralympics in Paris, he remains focused on the ultimate goal: to help secure a third consecutive gold medal for his team and solidify Iran's legacy in sitting volleyball. “The best (players) are in Iran,” he states confidently, reflecting the pride and passion he has for his country and the sport.
