Dates are highly valued in Islamic medicine. From a nutritional perspective, there is a significant difference between fresh, soft dates and dry ones. However, dry dates have less moisture and a longer shelf life than fresh ones. They also contain more fiber and carbohydrates, whereas fresh dates have more vitamins. Small-sized dates have higher antioxidant content. Dates have a warm and moist nature, and their complementary foods include pomegranate juice, almonds, vinegar, poppy seeds, rosewater, and lettuce. The nature of date syrup is warm and dry, and its complementary foods include vinegar, almonds, rosewater, and natural pickles.
Dates are rich in nutrition and help produce strong blood. They are beneficial for cold and phlegmatic diseases, back pain, joint diseases, respiratory illnesses, and cold-related diseases. Soaking them in fresh milk with cinnamon is useful for enhancing sexual strength. Date milk (made with sweet almond paste, ripe dates, honey, and cold water) is a brain-boosting drink that, when consumed before sleep, helps prevent osteoporosis, joint wear, and arthritis. Consuming dates with sweet almond paste regularly is an excellent way to gain weight, boost sexual energy, strengthen the kidneys, and serve as a mild laxative.
Excessive consumption of dates is harmful for those with a hot temperament living in hot climates, as it may cause problems with teeth, eyes, and throat, as well as lead to the creation of “burnt blood,” excessive humors, and headaches. In traditional medicine, dates are often recommended to be eaten with cinnamon, as it balances the body’s heat (especially for those living in regions where dates are not grown).
