If You're One Of Those People Who Takes A Shower Every Day, You Definitely Need To Read This.

According to the Family Magazine service of Saed News, many people believe that to have healthy and shiny hair, they must wash their hair with shampoo every day, while others say that frequent washing can make hair dry and brittle. Is using shampoo harmful to hair? How often should we shampoo our hair?

The British newspaper The Guardian answers these questions in a report.

Is shampoo harmful to hair?

Yiné Dmeto, a hairstylist and owner of a beauty salon in Arlington, Virginia, says, "Shampoo is not inherently harmful, and it is essential for maintaining healthy hair, cleaning the hair, and the scalp." Dr. Deepak Singh, a dermatologist, mentions that shampoo removes the natural oils that protect hair follicles and the scalp. However, there is a "balance point," meaning not using shampoo too much or too little.

How often should we shampoo?

Singh says the ideal frequency for washing hair depends on various factors, such as hair texture and type, the type of chemicals used, activity level, medications taken, and even the climate. Generally, it ranges from once a day to once a week.

Dr. Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, a dermatologist and hair health expert, says that if you have fine or delicate hair, more frequent washing is needed, while those with thick or curly hair require less. Colored, permed, or straightened hair should be washed less frequently, as it becomes more fragile with each shampoo. Hair washing also depends on factors like fragrance, freshness, and appearance. However, long intervals between washes, especially for those with oily scalps, can increase inflammation and excessive yeast production on the scalp, leading to itching and dandruff.

Which shampoos should we use?

Those with oily scalps and hair are advised to use clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoos, as they prevent oil buildup on the scalp while maintaining moisture and preventing dryness in the hair.

People with curly or braided hair can also use this type of shampoo and dilute it with water for easier washing. Those with normal scalp and hair can opt for a gentle moisturizing shampoo that balances the hair's natural moisture. Houshmand says these shampoos often contain ingredients like sodium gluconate, citric acid, and sodium benzoate, which cleanse the scalp and hydrate the hair.

People with color-treated, permed, or straightened hair are more prone to dryness and damage and should choose restorative products containing ceramides and proteins. She emphasizes looking for products labeled "color-treated hair" and "nourishing."

What is the correct method for shampooing?

Houshmand recommends taking a coin-sized amount of shampoo after wetting your hair. If your hair is long or curly, use a bit more, applying it to your scalp. Massage the shampoo into your scalp to remove any buildup of oils or dirt and stimulate blood circulation. Then, gently wash from the roots to the ends of the hair. Be sure to rinse thoroughly to remove all the shampoo, as residue can make hair appear dull.

For extra care, finish with a conditioner. Conditioner helps to bind the hair fibers and strengthens the hair. Finally, remember that hair health goes beyond just shampooing. A healthy scalp and a balanced diet are key to promoting hair growth, reflecting an internal approach.
