According to the cooking service of Saad News, the orange cake, which can be made with various recipes similar to sponge cake, is considered one of the easiest homemade cakes. The orange cake is a fragrant and aromatic cake that, in the European style, can be made with Greek yogurt. Despite the sugar, this cake has very little sweetness, so it can be consumed for breakfast as well. Given the benefits of oranges and their abundant use in the fall, one should not miss making this orange cake with yogurt during these cold days. Be sure to make and serve this simple and easy homemade cake for your gatherings.

Ingredients for Orange Yogurt Cake:

For the crust:

  • All-purpose flour: 2 ½ cups

  • Low-fat Greek yogurt: 1 ½ cups

  • Sugar: 1 ½ cups

  • Olive oil (without flavor): 2/3 cup

  • Eggs: 3

  • Orange juice: 2 tbsp

  • Finely chopped orange peel: 1 tsp

  • Vanilla: 1 tsp

  • Baking powder: 2 ½ tsp

  • Baking soda: ¾ tsp

  • Salt: 1/2 tsp

  • Method for baking Orange Yogurt Cake in the oven:

  • Prepare dry and wet ingredients: Orange cake with its spongy texture and delightful taste can be made with minimal ingredients. Preheat the oven to 176°C (350°F) so it’s ready to bake your cake. Grease the sides of the cake pan with butter. Cut parchment paper to fit the pan, grease it lightly with butter, and line the pan with it. To prepare the cake batter, sift the flour, salt, baking powder, and baking soda in a bowl two to three times and mix them together. In a separate bowl, combine the sugar, Greek yogurt, olive oil, orange juice, orange peel, and vanilla. Mix the wet ingredients well until smooth.

Tip: You can also grate the orange peel finely with a zester.

  • Prepare the batter: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and mix gently using a spatula until no lumps of batter are visible. Once your batter is ready, pour it carefully into the cake pan. Tap the pan on the counter two to three times to remove any excess air bubbles.

  • Bake the cake: Place the cake pan in the middle rack of the oven. Bake the cake for 50 to 60 minutes until the top is golden and the cake is fully baked. Once done, remove the cake from the oven and leave it in the pan for 10 minutes on a cooling rack. After that, remove the cake from the pan and let it cool for another 15 minutes. Finally, you can decorate the cake with whipped cream flowers, thin orange slices, and caramel sauce as per your preference.

Additional Tips for Making Orange Yogurt Cake:

  • Why use Greek yogurt in the Orange Cake: The main reason for using Greek yogurt in orange cake is the creamy texture it gives. Moreover, the acidity in Greek yogurt helps activate the baking soda, resulting in a light and fluffy cake.

  • Substituting Greek yogurt: Orange cake can be made with simple ingredients. If you don’t have Greek yogurt, you can substitute it with regular low-fat yogurt, sour cream, milk, or water in the same quantity. So, there’s no need to worry about making this delicious cake.

How to Make Orange Yogurt Cake in a Pot: If you love oranges and orange cake but don’t have access to an oven, you can make the cake in a pot just like you would make a sponge cake. Follow all the steps as above, and then place a large pot on the stove. Put a metal trivet inside the pot and place the cake pan on top. Cover the pot with a lid or a cloth and cook for about 1 hour.

Making Moist Orange Cake: This cake can also be made in a moist version, similar to chocolate cake with syrup. For this, you’ll need an orange syrup. Mix one cup of orange juice, one cup of sugar, and one tablespoon of cornstarch, then heat it until it thickens. Once cooled, pour the syrup over the sliced orange cake. Let the syrup soak into the cake for about 30 minutes.

Decorating Orange Cake: You can decorate the cake with orange glaze or orange zest. To make the glaze, mix sugar and orange juice in a small saucepan and bring it to a boil. Once the sugar dissolves, let it rest for a while. While the cake is still warm, drizzle the orange glaze over the cake with a spoon, giving it a lovely finish.
