SAEDNEWS: According to the definition demarcated by UNESCO, a geopark is an enclosed area with determined borders that comprises a number of sites that possess geological significance and can play an important role in the economic development of the community nearby.
According to SAEDNEWS, Have you ever heard about geoparks? They are special places that hold geological importance and offer a chance for communities to benefit economically. Recognized by UNESCO, geoparks are designated areas that showcase significant geological features and may also include elements of history, ecology, and culture.
A geopark is a designated area that features important geological sites. These areas not only highlight the beauty of nature but also play a vital role in helping local communities grow economically. UNESCO, which is the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, started the UNESCO Global Geopark label to showcase these remarkable sites and promote sustainable development. This label was officially put in place in 2015.
Geoparks work closely with other UNESCO sites, such as World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves, to create a network that supports conservation and education.
To become a part of the Global Network of Geoparks, a site must have some specific features:
1. A Management Plan: Geoparks need to have a solid plan in place to ensure sustainable development and help local communities thrive. This often includes promoting agritourism (tourism linked to agriculture) and geotourism (tourism focused on geological sites).
2. Protection of Sites: Geoparks take steps to protect and conserve their geological sites while offering educational tools about geology and environmental issues.
3. Community Involvement: Local authorities, indigenous communities, and private businesses work together to develop effective strategies for preserving the land and encouraging sustainability.
One notable geopark in the Middle East is Qeshm Geopark, located on Qeshm Island in Iran. It was the first of its kind in the region to receive recognition from UNESCO.
Iran has a wealth of geological wonders that could make for some amazing geoparks. Features like mountains, caves, and deserts contribute to its unique landscape.
Qeshm Geopark is currently the only geopark in Iran that is part of the UNESCO Global Network. However, there are more sites preparing to apply, including Aras Geopark, Tabas Geopark, Geno Biosphere Reserve, and Raggeh Geopark.
Qeshm Geopark was first listed in 2006 but was removed from the global list in 2012 due to insufficient efforts. Fortunately, it regained its status in 2017. This geopark has around 25 geosites and an impressive array of biodiversity. The island is home to 16 mammal species and a staggering 226 bird species, making it a fantastic spot for nature lovers.
While Qeshm has a subtropical climate that can be hot and humid, its unique features, like the Hara Mangrove Forest, offer beautiful landscapes and rich ecosystems.
Located in the northwest of Iran, Aras Geopark is home to diverse climates and vegetation due to its mountainous terrain. It has beautiful valleys and lofty peaks, making it a gem for geotourism. Although it has not yet been approved as a Global Geopark, efforts are being made to secure this status.
Found in Hormozgan Province, Geno Biosphere Reserve is recognized for its stunning mountains and diverse vegetation. The varying climates here ensure that the region supports a wide range of plant and animal life. It's a great spot for hiking, especially in the cooler months.
This geopark highlights unique landscapes, including salt plains and moving sand dunes. The area is rich in history, with remnants of old caravanserais from the ancient Silk Road. Tabas also houses the Naybandan Wildlife Sanctuary, which protects the region's wildlife.
Geoparks are incredible places where nature and culture intertwine, offering breathtaking views and unforgettable experiences. As more sites join this global movement, the potential for growth in eco-tourism and community development continues to expand. If you're a nature enthusiast or a curious traveler, visiting a geopark might just be the adventure you're looking for!
