China’s Xi Pushes for Closer Cooperation with North Korea

Chinese President Xi Jinping sent congratulations to North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on the 77th anniversary of North Korea’s founding, KCNA reported via Reuters. In his message, Xi emphasized Beijing’s readiness to “join hands in promoting the China-DPRK friendship and the socialist cause of the two countries through intensified strategic communication, brisk visits, and close cooperation.”

The message comes shortly after the rare Beijing meeting between the two leaders, marking their first face-to-face encounter in six years. Kim attended a military parade in the Chinese capital, where Xi highlighted the need for closer coordination between China and North Korea on regional and global issues.

Experts note that Kim’s visit to Beijing could help repair frayed relations with China, which have cooled as Pyongyang strengthened ties with Russia, and could assist North Korea in securing economic aid amid ongoing sanctions. During the parade, Kim was seen interacting with Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin, as China showcased its military might.

Following the visit, Kim inspected a ground test of a “high-thrust solid-fuel engine” made with carbon fiber, describing it as a “significant change” in expanding North Korea’s nuclear strategic capabilities, state media reported.

This sequence of events highlights an apparent recalibration in North Korea’s foreign relations strategy, with Beijing playing a central role in Pyongyang’s regional positioning and security ambitions.
