SAEDNEWS: Rice is one of the main staples on the tables in the country, often served alongside various types of kebabs, stews, and other dishes at most ceremonies and gatherings. However, cooking it is not always easy, and the best method to prevent the rice from becoming mushy or sticking together is to drain it.

6 Solutions to Fix Mushy Rice

According to SAEDNEWS, An important point when draining rice is paying attention to the timing, because if the rice is drained too late for any reason, it will become mushy. It may have happened to you as well that your rice turned mushy. If you don't have much time to prepare rice again, what do you do with mushy rice?

What can I do to make mushy rice look better?

Avoid Stirring the Rice Too Much

We all get stressed when we have guests and our rice turns mushy, so we quickly stir it to check how much it has broken down. However, this is a mistake because stirring and using a spoon on the rice crushes the grains, making the rice even more mushy.

Pouring Cold Water

If, for any reason, your rice becomes mashed and mushy, stay calm and quickly drain it into a colander, then rinse it with cold water or, even better, ice-cold water. The cold water will prevent the rice from becoming any softer and will help wash away the excess starch.

Adding Tahdig

Seeing a golden, crispy tahdig (the crispy layer of rice or bread that forms at the bottom of the pot during cooking) will catch the attention of your tahdig-loving guests and distract them from the softness of the rice. Additionally, using bread or potato for the tahdig will help those who eat less rice because of its softness or mushiness enjoy the meal and not go hungry.

Not Closing the Pot Lid

When your rice becomes softer than usual and mushy, never seal the pot tightly. If the lid is closed, the steam will condense into droplets and fall back into the rice, making it even softer. Don’t worry about the rice cooking completely—keep the lid slightly open or fully open.

Not Using a Kitchen Towel

When your rice becomes mushy, avoid covering the pot with a kitchen towel. A kitchen towel is typically used to trap steam and help cook the rice, but in this case, you want the excess moisture to evaporate, so it’s better not to use it

Increasing the Heat

When your rice becomes mushy, slightly increase the heat. However, be careful not to burn the rice. Raising the heat will cause the excess moisture to evaporate, helping the rice become a bit drier.
