2024 Olympics: Australian Breakdancer Raygun Responds to Backlash Following Her Low Quality Performance

According to SAEDNEWS, Raygun, the talented Australian breakdancer known offstage as Rachael Gunn, is taking a stand against the criticism following her performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics. After her routine went viral for its unique simplicity, many viewers questioned her approach, but Raygun is unapologetic in her artistic vision.

In a press conference held on August 10, Gunn addressed the backlash directly. “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best—their power moves,” she explained, as reported by ESPN. “What I bring is creativity.” Her performance on August 9, while celebrated for its originality, unfortunately earned her zero points from the judges, leading to a flurry of commentary on social media about the perceived lack of difficulty in her routine.

Despite the harsh judgment online, Raygun insists that her artistry is what sets her apart. “All of my moves are original,” she emphasized. “Creativity is really important to me. I go out there and I show my artistry. Sometimes it speaks to the judges, and sometimes it doesn't. I do my thing, and it represents art. That is what it is about.”

At 36 years old, Raygun has extensive experience in the breaking scene, including lecturing at her alma mater, Macquarie University. Her academic interests even delve into the “cultural politics” of breakdancing, showcasing her deep understanding of the art form beyond just performance.

In light of the online trolling directed at her, Australian Olympic Chief Anna Meares has come to Raygun's defense. “I love Rachael,” Meares stated emphatically during the same press conference. “What has occurred on social media with trolls and keyboard warriors has been really disappointing.”

She praised Raygun for her role on the Olympic team, noting, “Raygun is an absolutely loved member of this Olympic team. She has represented the Olympic spirit with great enthusiasm. I absolutely love her courage and her character, and I feel very disappointed for her that she has come under this attack.”

Raygun’s journey to the Olympics may not have resulted in the points she hoped for, but her dedication to creativity and artistry continues to shine through. As she navigates this challenging moment, it's clear that she remains committed to her unique style and vision. Here’s to wishing Raygun all the best as she forges ahead in her breakdancing career!
