The British newspaper "The Guardian" has tackled a very important question in a recent report, which we will explore below.
According to the family magazine service of Saed News, many people believe that washing their hair with shampoo every day is necessary for healthy and shiny hair. Meanwhile, others claim that frequent washing makes hair dry and brittle. So, is shampooing harmful to your hair? How often should you shampoo?
The Guardian addresses these questions in its report.
Is Shampooing Harmful to Hair?
Yene Damtew, a hairdresser and salon owner in Arlington, Virginia, says: "Shampoo is not inherently harmful and is essential for maintaining healthy hair, cleansing the hair, and scalp." Dr. Deepj Singh, a dermatologist, explains that shampoo removes natural oils that protect hair follicles and the scalp. However, there's a "balance point"—you shouldn't shampoo too much or too little.
How Often Should You Shampoo?
Singh says the appropriate frequency for washing your hair depends on various factors, including hair texture and type, the chemical composition of the shampoo, activity level, medications being taken, and even the weather. Generally, it ranges from once a day to once a week.
Dr. Elizabeth Bahar Houshmand, a dermatologist and hair health expert, adds that if your hair is thin and delicate, it requires more frequent washing. Conversely, thick and curly hair needs less frequent washing. Colored, permed, or straightened hair should also be washed less often, as it becomes more brittle with each shampooing. The frequency of washing hair depends on specific factors such as smell, freshness, and appearance. However, long intervals between washes, especially for those with oily skin, can increase inflammation and excess yeast production on the scalp, leading to itching and dandruff.
What Shampoos Should You Use?
Those with oily scalp and hair are advised to use clarifying or anti-dandruff shampoos, as they prevent oil buildup on the scalp while providing sufficient moisture to the hair to prevent dryness.
People with braided or textured hair can also use this type of shampoo, diluted with water for easier washing. Those with normal scalp and hair can use gentle hydrating shampoos that balance the natural moisture of the hair. Houshmand says these shampoos often contain ingredients like sodium gluconate, citric acid, and sodium benzoate, which clean the scalp and moisturize the hair.
For individuals with colored, permed, or straightened hair, which are more prone to dryness and damage, it is better to use restorative products containing ceramides and proteins. Houshmand emphasizes looking for products labeled "color-treated hair care" and "nourishing."
What Is the Correct Way to Shampoo?
Houshmand explains that after wetting your hair, take a coin-sized amount of shampoo, or double if your hair is long or curly. Then, massage the shampoo into your scalp to remove any oil or dirt buildup and stimulate blood circulation. Gently wash from the roots to the ends of your hair. When rinsing, ensure all the shampoo is thoroughly washed out, as leftover shampoo can make hair look dull.
For additional hair care, finish washing with a conditioner. Conditioner helps bond hair fibers and strengthens the hair. Finally, remember that hair health extends beyond showering. A healthy scalp and a balanced diet are key to promoting hair growth, reflecting an internal approach.
