SAEDNEWS: his mummy, resembling a cross between a mermaid and a monkey, measures a total of 30 centimeters in length. Its body features a furry torso reminiscent of mammals, a scaly fish-like tail, two human-like arms, and tiny, sharp teeth.
According to the Society Service report from Saed News, citing Soraya, scientists have finally been able to observe the actual structure of a strange mummified monkey-mermaid.
This bizarre creature has fueled scientists’ curiosity for decades and apparently dates back centuries. The mummy, resembling a combination of a mermaid and a monkey, measures approximately 30 centimeters in length. Its body consists of a furry torso similar to that of a mammal, a scaly fish-like tail, two human-like arms, and small, sharp teeth.
In Japanese folklore, half-human, half-fish beings with monkey-like mouths are called ningyo. Though less glamorous than Western mermaids, they carry just as much myth and legend. A handwritten note found inside a wooden box with this peculiar mummy indicates that the creature was discovered around 1740 along the modern-day coast of Kochi.
Since February 2022, scientists from Kurashiki University of Science and Arts (KUSA) have been collaborating with a local temple to uncover the true nature of this strange entity. They have revealed that whether it is a hoax, a trick, or a work of art, the creature is not an animal—it is man-made.
