According to the analytical news website Saed News, hyenas are carnivorous animals and members of the Hyaenidae family, known for their unique appearance and behavior in nature. Hyenas typically live in Africa and parts of Asia, and they play a significant role in the ecosystem as scavengers, which makes them very important.

Biological Characteristics:

  • Size and Appearance: Hyenas are medium-sized animals with muscular bodies, and their front legs are longer than their hind legs. This gives them a slouched appearance. Their fur is usually spotted or striped.

  • Species: There are four species of hyena:

    • Spotted Hyena (Crocuta crocuta): The largest and most well-known species, with black spots on its body.

    • Striped Hyena (Hyaena hyaena): Characterized by black stripes on its body and smaller than the spotted hyena.

    • Brown Hyena (Parahyaena brunnea): Has dense brown fur and a more limited habitat.

    • Aardwolf (Proteles cristata): The smallest species, which primarily feeds on insects, especially termites.

  • Behavior and Diet: Contrary to the common belief that hyenas are only scavengers, they are also skilled hunters. Spotted hyenas hunt in groups and can take down large animals like zebras and antelopes. They also feed on the remains of other animals' kills.

  • Social Life: Spotted hyenas live socially in groups called "clans," which are led by a dominant female. These groups can consist of dozens of hyenas and have a complex social hierarchy.

  • Reproduction: Females usually give birth to 2 to 4 cubs after a gestation period of about 100 days. The cubs are initially blind and entirely dependent on their mother.

Environmental Importance:
Hyenas play a crucial role in ecosystems. By feeding on carcasses, they help clean the environment and prevent the spread of diseases. Spotted hyenas also help maintain population balance in wildlife by hunting weaker species.
