According to the Science and Technology Service of Saadnews, citing News Online, recent studies show that longer naps disrupt nighttime eating habits and sleep patterns. Researchers say that midday naps lasting more than 30 minutes can be associated with an increased body mass index (BMI), higher blood pressure, and the onset of heart disease and diabetes.

The results indicate that napping for more than half an hour during the day is linked to a higher risk of obesity. Obesity is a growing concern affecting over 1 billion people worldwide. The accumulation of fat in the body is related to the digestion of food during metabolic processes.

Sleep is the most sedentary state of the body, and prolonged periods of it can gradually lead to weight gain. Additionally, long naps can leave you feeling sluggish even long after waking up.

Other harms of long naps:

  • Disruption of nighttime sleep: If the nap is too long or too late, it may interfere with nighttime sleep.

  • Confusion: Long naps are often associated with feelings of drowsiness and confusion. Upon waking, you may feel sluggish and tired, as you might have woken from a deeper sleep stage.

Studies also show that long naps are linked to many other health conditions, including high blood pressure, vascular diseases, depression, obesity, inflammation, arthritis, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cognitive decline in people with dementia, and more.
