SAEDNEWS: If you're fed up with Facebook but can't get enough of TikTok, you're not alone.
According to SAEDNEWS, Recent research has unveiled the most loved and least favored social media apps around the globe. According to the findings, Facebook has earned the title of the most disliked platform, ranking as the least favored app in 39 countries. Following closely behind is Reddit, which holds the unfortunate distinction of being the worst-rated app in 30 countries, including the UK.
On a more positive note, TikTok stands out as the UK and the world's favorite app, topping the charts in 30 countries overall. The research, conducted by email tracking service Mailsuite, analyzed Google Play Store reviews for 1,500 different apps, highlighting a stark divide between user preferences.
It's no surprise that Facebook's low rating may be disheartening for Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Alongside Facebook, both Instagram and Threads—also owned by Meta—appear in the top five most disliked social media platforms.
In South America, Facebook is particularly reviled, with only four countries listing any other app as their least favorite. Its unpopularity extends into vast regions of Africa and Asia as well, where it ranked at the bottom in nations like India, Pakistan, Nigeria, and Morocco. Instagram and Threads didn't fare much better, each being the least liked in four countries.
Threads, launched as an alternative to Twitter, debuted with much anticipation in the summer of 2023. Currently, it is gaining traction, outpacing its rival X (formerly Twitter) with triple the daily downloads on iOS and double on the Google Play Store. X itself is considered the least popular app in 10 countries and ranks third on the overall most-hated list. The platform has faced its share of controversies since Elon Musk’s takeover in October 2022, notably over moderation cutbacks and a rise in hate speech that has deterred advertisers.
In the UK and much of Europe, Reddit takes the lead as the most disliked social media app. It ranks as the lowest-rated site in 30 countries, including Germany, France, Spain, and Sweden. The platform, founded in 2005, has seen significant changes lately following its public offering and has adjusted its advertising strategies while restricting search engine access to its content.
However, not all apps evoke such negative feelings; many have captured the hearts of users worldwide. TikTok, launched in 2016 by ByteDance, ranks as the most beloved social media app, topping charts in 30 countries. Its popularity has surged among younger generations, even as it faces scrutiny over security concerns and its relationship with its Chinese parent company. This has sparked some attempts by U.S. senators to ban the app.
Interestingly, in the U.S., the top-rated app is BeReal—a newcomer that prompts users to take unfiltered photos daily. This French social media platform, launched in 2020, captured users' attention by allowing simultaneous selfies and rear-camera shots.
While TikTok maintained its status as the most-downloaded app from 2018 to 2022, it was surpassed by Instagram in 2023, with 733 million downloads compared to Instagram's 767 million. This comeback for Instagram is largely attributed to the success of its Reels feature, which mimics TikTok’s style. Nonetheless, Mailsuite's research found that the photo-sharing app only ranked as the top choice in nine countries.
Notably, several well-known apps appeared on both the most loved and most hated lists—Facebook, Instagram, and Threads—in particular. This suggests that these platforms are especially polarizing, while others like TikTok find themselves more universally adored.
