SAEDNEWS: South Carolina basketball player Ashlyn Watkins has been arrested on charges of assault and kidnapping following an incident at a campus housing center.
According to SAEDNEWS, Ashlyn Watkins, a standout player for the South Carolina women’s basketball team, was arrested on Saturday in Columbia, South Carolina. She faces serious charges of assault and kidnapping after an incident at a student housing center.
Details about what happened are still unclear, but reports say Watkins allegedly “forcefully” grabbed the victim’s face, pulled her arms, and pushed her in the housing area where many basketball players live. It’s also reported that she picked up the victim and carried her down the hall, preventing her from leaving. This action falls under the definition of kidnapping.
The victim was able to escape and triggered a fire alarm, which led to her receiving medical attention for non-life-threatening injuries. After the incident, Watkins was charged with first-degree assault and battery, as well as kidnapping. She was quickly released after posting a $30,000 bond and is scheduled to appear in court on October 25.
The University of South Carolina has acknowledged Watkins' arrest and is currently gathering more information. It is also expected that she may face suspension from the basketball program as per university policy regarding arrests.
Watkins is entering her third season with the Gamecocks and played a significant role in helping the team achieve a national championship last season. She averaged 9.2 points and 7.4 rebounds per game, contributing to the team’s impressive 38-0 record and victory over Iowa in the championship game.
As the situation develops, fans and teammates are concerned about Watkins and the impact of this incident on her future in basketball. The Gamecocks are set to open their new season on November 10 against North Carolina State.
