SAEDNEWS: Meta is planning to build a nuclear power plant to supply energy to its data centers in the United States.
According to SaedNews, Meta has announced its plans to use nuclear energy to power its data centers in the United States. Aiming to add one to four gigawatts of nuclear energy capacity by the early 2030s, Meta is currently accepting proposals from nuclear energy developers for this project.
In its request, Meta is seeking partners with experience and expertise in nuclear reactors, whether small modular reactors (SMRs) or larger reactors.
Meta is not imposing specific geographical restrictions on the location of the nuclear facilities. Previously, Meta intended to build a nuclear-powered data center; however, according to the Financial Times, the discovery of a rare species of bees near the project site led to the cancellation of the plan.
In a statement, Meta said that given the significant technological advancements in various industries and the crucial role these advancements play in economic growth, it believes that nuclear energy can play an effective role in providing stable and foundational electricity: "This energy will not only help grow the power grids that feed our data centers but will also provide energy to the communities surrounding these centers."
