Blinken Claims 90% of Gaza Truce and Prisoner Swap Deal Agreed

According to SAEDNEWS, On September 6, 2024, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced that most parts of a ceasefire agreement and a prisoner swap between Hamas and Israel have been finalized.

During a news conference in Haiti, Blinken stated that both sides must urgently address their remaining issues to finalize the Gaza truce. He said, “based on what I’ve seen, 90% is agreed, but there are a few critical issues that remain where we need to be able to get agreement.” He emphasized that “it’s really incumbent on both parties to get to yes on these remaining issues.”

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu challenged Blinken's claim, calling it “exactly inaccurate.” He told Fox News, “There’s a story, a narrative out there that there’s a deal out there… that’s just a false narrative. There’s not a deal in the making,” he added, stating, “unfortunately, it’s not close.”

Netanyahu also confirmed his commitment to keeping Israeli troops in the strategic Philadelphi Corridor, a 14km strip of land along the Gaza-Egypt border.

The ongoing conflict has led to a devastating toll, with Palestinian health officials reporting that over 40,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have lost their lives due to Israel’s military actions.
