SAEDNEWS: Matt has transformed found utensils into recycled metal sculptures for the last 15 years. Bending, welding, and mounting segments of cutlery upon one another, spoon bowls evoke plumage and fork prongs resemble sprawling quills.
According to SAEDNEWS, The Charleston-based artist is collaborating with his friend Jacob Kent to create unique habitats for each avian figure, carefully mounting them within specially designed frameworks. “As I grow older, I find myself increasingly fascinated by birds,” Wilson reveals. “The more I observe and engage with them, the more inspired I become to explore different poses and representations.”
Each bird is thoughtfully positioned against an elegantly arched wooden backdrop or gently resting on a branch in an outdoor setting. This deliberate placement allows these avian sculptures to nestle into an organic, natural environment that beautifully contrasts with their rigid, metal construction. The juxtaposition of the delicate, intricate details of the birds with the sturdy materials of their habitats highlights the artist's deep appreciation for the beauty of nature and craftsmanship. This project not only showcases Wilson's artistic vision but also invites viewers to reflect on the often-overlooked beauty of birds and their habitats, encouraging a greater connection to the natural world. Through this partnership with Kent, Wilson is able to infuse each piece with a sense of life and movement, bringing the avian figures to life in a way that speaks to their inherent elegance and grace.
