The Valley of the Kings: A Land of Pharaohs

The Valley of the Kings is filled with ancient temples of powerful pharaohs, making it one of Egypt’s most famous historical sites.

Around 500 years ago, this western region of the Nile River served as a burial ground for Egypt’s most powerful rulers.

Rock-cut temples were built between the 11th and 16th centuries BCE, and archaeologists continue to discover new temples even today.

While only a few temples are open to the public, the Egyptian Tourism Authority has made it possible to explore some of them through virtual tours.

The Tomb of Pharaoh Ramesses VI (KV9)

Ramesses VI Nebmaatre Meryamun was the fifth pharaoh of Egypt’s 20th Dynasty. He ruled Egypt for 8 years in the mid to late 12th century BCE. After his death, he was buried in a temple that archaeologists call KV9. Surprisingly, Ramesses VI did not originally build this tomb for himself! Instead, he took over the tomb of his nephew, Ramesses V, who ruled before him. He later moved his nephew’s body to another temple and made modifications to the tomb for himself. Changes included expanding the tomb and redesigning its decorations.

Explore the Interior with a Virtual Tour

Thanks to a 3D virtual tour, you can now experience the magnificent interiors of this ancient burial site. The layout closely resembles the original, with a series of corridors leading to a central burial chamber. The first hallway is adorned with art depicting Ramesses VI standing beside Osiris, the god of the underworld and afterlife. Originally, these walls featured images of Ramesses V, but Ramesses VI replaced them with his own depictions. Further along the corridors, sacred texts describe the journey of the soul into the afterlife before burial.
