According to the history section of Saed News, Fawzia Fuad, an Egyptian princess and Empress of Iran (born November 5, 1921, in Alexandria, Egypt – passed away on July 2, 2013, in Alexandria), was the first wife of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and the sister of King Farouk of Egypt.

Fawzia was an Egyptian citizen but of Circassian, Albanian, and French descent. She belonged to the royal dynasty of Muhammad Ali Pasha. The Muhammad Ali family was of Albanian origin and had risen to power in Egypt during the Ottoman rule.

Fawzia’s Selection as Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s Wife

In 1938, the marriage between Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Fawzia bint Fuad was proposed. She was remarkably beautiful, attracting attention even from Hollywood. Her family background was a mix of Egyptian, Albanian, and French heritage. Most importantly, like the Pahlavi family, her family also had strong ties to Britain. Fawzia and Mohammad Reza had met once by chance in Switzerland three years prior to their engagement.

The biggest obstacle to their marriage was Article 37 of the Supplementary Constitutional Law of Iran, which required the mother of the crown prince to be of Iranian descent. In an unprecedented move, the Iranian Parliament not only granted Fawzia Iranian citizenship but also officially recognized her as of Iranian descent.

In this video, you can see excerpts from the extravagant wedding ceremonies of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi and Fawzia Fuad, held in both Egypt and Iran.
