Inside Kyiv’s Deadly Sting: SBU Hunts Down Russian FSB Agents After Assassination Plot

According to Saed News, on Monday the Security Service of Ukraine disclosed that two suspected agents of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) were located and fatally engaged by SBU operatives in Kyiv. The pair, believed to be responsible for the targeted killing of SBU officer Ivan Voronish last Thursday, were tracked to a safe house in the capital.

Voronish was ambushed and shot dead while en route to work, in what Ukrainian authorities immediately characterized as an assassination orchestrated by the FSB. Following the initial attack, SBU counterintelligence teams launched a coordinated hunt, ultimately uncovering the suspects’ hideout in a residential district of Kyiv. According to SBU statements, the two—one man and one woman—opened fire when agents moved to arrest them, prompting a lethal exchange.

Footage released by the SBU shows head of service Vasyl Maliuk standing beside the suspects’ bodies, warning that “death is the only fate that awaits our enemies on Ukrainian soil.” The agency detailed how the operatives had been tasked with surveilling Voronish’s daily movements and were equipped with a silenced pistol, ostensibly to carry out the assassination.

The SBU, Ukraine’s principal security and intelligence body, has in recent months intensified covert actions against Russian targets, including a series of drone strikes on Russian airbases. This latest operation comes amid an upsurge in hostilities, marking the most extensive drone offensive against Ukraine in four years.

Russian forces, for their part, have escalated attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure. In recent days, civilian areas around Kyiv and other regions have endured renewed shelling and missile strikes, underlining the continued volatility of the conflict. As Kyiv strikes back at alleged Kremlin agents on its own streets, analysts warn the war is expanding beyond traditional battlefields into the heart of Europe’s capitals.
