Ruling on Cooking Raisins in Food

Most religious scholars have stated that dates, dried grapes (moyez), raisins, and their water remain pure even when they boil, and eating them is considered lawful. However, some scholars say: if dried grapes and raisins are added to food and boiled to the extent that water penetrates into them and the water inside also boils, it becomes unlawful to eat, though it is not impure, and they can be removed from the food and eaten. There is no issue with frying or steaming them in rice or similar dishes. Regarding dates, if their water enters the food, boils, and is consumed, it is permissible. However, if the amount is such that it boils but does not dissipate, it cannot be eaten.

Does adding raisins and dried grapes to food and cooking them make the food impure?

  • Ayatollahs Imam, Nouri, Khamenei, Makarem: No, the food remains pure, and eating it is lawful.

  • Ayatollahs Nouri, Zanjani, Saffi: The food does not become impure, but it is recommended to avoid eating it.

Ayatollah Bahjat: If raisins and dried grapes boil during cooking, their purity and consumption are questionable.

What is the ruling on cooking or frying raisins? Does it cause boiling inside the raisins?

  • Imam Khomeini (ra): It is pure, and eating it is lawful.

  • Ayatollah Araki (ra): If boiling occurs due to cooking, eating it becomes unlawful, but it is not impure.

  • Ayatollah Bahjat (ra): If boiling occurs, it is recommended to avoid eating it, as it depends on the temperature.

  • Ayatollah Tabrizi (ra): There is no issue, and it is lawful to consume.

Does cooking raisins in food (like rice) without separating them make it problematic? (In other words, if they have not been removed after cooking)

  • Ayatollah Khamenei: If the raisins are in the food, they are pure and lawful to eat.

  • Ayatollah Khoei (ra): Raisins and their water, even if they boil, remain pure, and eating them is lawful.

  • Ayatollah Shabiri Zanjani: If raisins and their water boil, they remain pure and lawful to eat, although it is recommended to avoid them.

About the religious authority of Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi:

According to Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi's fatwa, if dried grapes and raisins are added to food and boil such that the water enters them and boils inside, they become unlawful to eat. However, they are not impure, and one can separate them and eat the rest of the food. There is no issue with frying or steaming them in rice or similar dishes. In the case of dates, if their water enters the food, boils, and dissipates, there is no issue with eating it. However, if the amount is large enough to boil but not dissipate, it cannot be eaten.

Conclusion:

According to the fatwas of various scholars, cooking raisins or dried grapes does not cause the food to become impure, and eating it is generally permissible. However, some scholars recommend avoiding it or consider it questionable if boiling occurs inside the raisins.
