Which foods are forbidden in Islam?
When God created humans, He also created their sustenance. Just as food impacts the physical growth and strength of a person, it also significantly affects their spirit and soul. Therefore, the Wise and Exalted God has forbidden certain foods to prevent their harmful effects on our bodies and souls. Although today's science has not yet fully understood the psychological effects of forbidden foods on the human spirit, it has conclusively proven the harmful effects of some of these foods on physical health, which is a clear sign of the scientific miracles of the Quran.
The Quran has declared permissible foods that benefit both the body and soul, satisfying human taste, while forbidding harmful and impure foods. The prohibition of non-hygienic and repulsive foods is one of the great services of divine religion to humanity, as at a time when germs were unknown and the effects of impure foods in causing diseases were not clear, these foods were declared forbidden. This was a great service in preserving human health.
There are numerous verses in the Holy Quran regarding forbidden foods.
❌ Carrion
Carrion refers to the body of any animal whose meat has been declared lawful by God, whether it is a four-legged animal or a bird, and whether wild or domesticated. Therefore, eating carrion and benefiting from it in any other way is forbidden.
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is carrion..."
🩸 Blood
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is blood..."
In the days of ignorance, blood was poured over the large intestine of the animal and consumed after preparation. However, with the revelation of the Quran, the spilled blood was prohibited, but the small amount of blood that mixes with meat or the blood in the liver that has turned into meat was permitted.
🐷🥩 Pork
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is pork..."
This verse separately forbids pork to make it clear that pork and its meat are entirely prohibited, whether it is carrion or not. However, animals such as dogs, cats, and monkeys are also included, but pork is specifically mentioned because people are more inclined to eat it than other similar animals.
🥩🍖 Animals slaughtered un-Islamically
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is carrion... and any animal slaughtered in the name of other than Allah..."
This verse indicates that any lawful animal slaughtered in the name of anyone other than God, or in which the Islamic slaughtering regulations are not followed, or slaughtered by non-believers, is forbidden, and its meat is not lawful to eat.
🥩🍖 Forbidden meats
Some types of meat from animals are forbidden.
"O you who have believed... lawful for you are the animals of grazing livestock except that which is recited to you..."
God Almighty in this verse begins by commanding the fulfillment of covenants, which includes all divine laws, followed by a series of Islamic rules, the first of which is the permissibility of eating the meat of certain animals.
🥂 Wine
"Wine," which is translated as "Khamr" in Persian, originally means covering something. Anything used to cover is also called "Khamr," although it usually refers to the headscarf worn by women. In the book Al-Mu'jam Maqayis al-Lughah, "Khamr" is described as something that covers or mixes in secrecy. Since wine covers the mind, it is called Khamr because it causes intoxication, and intoxication veils the mind, preventing a person from distinguishing good from bad.
It is important to note that "Khamr" in Islamic terms refers to any intoxicating liquid, not just wine made from grapes, but also from raisins, dates, or any other substance.
🟫 Clay
Eating clay (earth mixed with water, whether wet or dry) is forbidden, and it is recommended to avoid even the earth itself unless it is from the tomb of Imam Hussain (PBUH) and used for healing purposes.
🤢 Suffocated animals
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is carrion... and suffocated animals..."
👊 Beaten animals
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is carrion... and the beaten animals..."
This refers to animals that die from excessive beating or a severe blow with a stick or any other instrument, and it is forbidden to eat their meat.
🐂 Animals killed by horns
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is carrion... and the animals killed by horns..."
An animal that dies as a result of being gored by another animal's horns has forbidden meat.
🤪 Prey eaten by predators
God Almighty says:
"Forbidden to you is carrion... and what a predator eats unless you slaughter it..."
💵 Gambling-related animal slaughter
"Forbidden to you is... what is determined by the arrows of gambling."
🐡Sea and non-sea animals
According to common belief, all types of sea animals, except for fish and shrimp, are considered forbidden. It is even claimed to be a consensus. Fish with scales are lawful, but those without are considered forbidden according to popular opinion.
🕊️ Birds: Among birds, birds of prey, like eagles, and transformed birds, like peacocks, are non-edible.
🐄🐮Four-legged animals: Among these, predators like lions and transformed animals like elephants are not edible.
🐜 Insects: All types of insects, like mice and scorpions, are not edible.
The prohibition of eating the meat of some animals is also caused by their impurity or being considered "filthy" (e.g., pig's meat) and other causes such as consumption of pig's milk or sexual contact with a human.
🐣 Eggs: The edibility of animal eggs depends on the edibility of their meat. If the meat of the animal is forbidden, so is its egg.
