How Can One Pray While Wearing Makeup?

"What is the Islamic ruling on praying with makeup?"

Makeup can be important for women, but our religion not only does not oppose beauty and feminine adornment, but also encourages it. There are certain rulings associated with it that must be observed. Praying with makeup is not problematic as long as the makeup does not prevent the forehead from touching the prayer mat during prostration.

What kind of makeup does not invalidate the prayer?

Wearing clean and light-colored clothes, grooming one's appearance, using perfume, and wearing a necklace during prayer are encouraged. However, there is no specific recommendation about facial makeup during prayer. Applying henna to the hands, as long as it is not seen by a non-mahram, is recommended. A narration from Imam Sadiq (A.S) states: "It is not appropriate for a woman to pray without adornment, such as a necklace, or with her hands unadorned with henna." A woman who has applied makeup on her face, used whitening cream, or adorned her face and hands with jewelry, can pray in this state, provided a non-mahram does not see her. However, if the makeup prevents the forehead from touching the prayer mat, the prayer is invalid.

The views of religious authorities about praying with makeup:

If the makeup is applied after performing ablution and is not thick enough to form a layer that prevents the forehead from touching the mat, there is no problem with the prayer. However, if a non-mahram sees her, she must cover her face. You can read the views of the religious authorities on this issue below.

  • Ayatollah Khamenei: Makeup does not invalidate the ablution as long as it does not impair the mind, such as insanity or unconsciousness.

  • Ayatollah Shabiri Zanjani: In this case, if one remains so still that it is not obvious they are praying, their prayer is invalid; otherwise, there is no issue.

  • Ayatollah Safi Golpaygani: If the makeup does not cause the loss of reason, the prayer is not invalid.

  • Ayatollah Makarem Shirazi: If the level of awareness is diminished but not entirely lost, the prayer is valid.

  • Ayatollah Nouri Hamadani: If the makeup does not result in the loss of reason, even temporarily, the prayer remains valid.

What invalidates the prayer?

  1. If one loses one of the conditions of prayer during it, such as realizing their clothes are impure.

  2. If something happens during the prayer that invalidates ablution or ghusl, such as urinating.

  3. If someone places their hands on top of each other during the prayer, as some non-Shiites do.

  4. Saying "Ameen" after reciting Al-Fatiha, though if done by mistake or out of precaution, the prayer remains valid.

  5. Turning away from the Qibla intentionally or unintentionally, or turning too far in any direction, even if it is not fully toward the left or right.

  6. Intentionally saying a word that has meaning, even if it is just one letter. If no meaning is intended, the prayer must be repeated if there are two or more letters, but if said by mistake, the prayer is not invalid.

  7. Laughing out loud intentionally, though if done accidentally or by smiling, the prayer remains valid.

  8. Crying loudly for worldly matters intentionally invalidates the prayer, but crying silently or for the sake of the Hereafter is acceptable, and is considered a good deed.

  9. Actions that disrupt the formal structure of the prayer, like clapping or jumping, even if minor.

  10. Eating or drinking during the prayer in such a manner that it is obvious one is not praying.

  11. Doubt regarding the number of units of prayer, such as in a two- or three-unit prayer.

  12. Intentionally or accidentally altering one of the essential actions of the prayer.
