Why Don't Hotels Have Room Number 420?!

Saturday, January 11, 2025

The number 420 is a global symbol for the use of the drug hashish, and this is why hotel owners try to eliminate this number from their rooms or change it to 419+1, to prevent the use of this drug in their hotels.

Why Don't Hotels Have Room Number 420?!

In some hotels, where this number is used, a "No drugs allowed" sign is placed under room number 420, but still, many hotels prefer not to have a room numbered 420 at all.

The origin of this belief dates back to the 1970s when California students agreed to gather around the Louis Pasteur statue at 4:20 p.m. to use hashish, and they made this time and day a ritual, using the phrase "Louis 420" as their code. From then on, 420 became an international symbol for marijuana users in Western countries. So, if you ever find that a hotel doesn’t have a room number 420 or you see room numbers arranged from 400 to 419 and then 421, don’t be surprised.

Now, let's talk a bit about the mystery of numbers. You've probably heard that the number 7 is associated with good luck, while 13 is considered unlucky, and some buildings don't have a 13th floor because of this fear. In ancient civilizations, certain numbers were also significant, such as the number 5 in Pythagoras’ time, which was considered a perfect number, and the number 23, which is famous in sports, especially used by basketball player Michael Jordan.

The number 420 is also well-known, but the number 8 is associated with good fortune and perfection. The number 12 has become prominent in various sports. The mathematical term "googol," which means the number 1 followed by 100 zeros, became famous when it was associated with the Google search engine. And of course, the number 666 is one that many people try to avoid.

Numerology, or the interpretation of numbers, is used in astrology and suggests that numbers have hidden meanings. For example, according to one interpretation, number 1 represents generosity and power, 2 represents creativity and sensitivity, 3 symbolizes idealism and travel, and so on.

In all of these beliefs, each number has both positive and negative interpretations, and they are analyzed in relation to one another. Numbers like 10, 11, 12, and so on have their own meanings, and even compound numbers like 13 or 22 can represent various aspects of life such as change, sacrifice, or caution.

This is just a brief summary of what people believe about numbers.
