SAEDNEWS: Development comes days after rival Trump's campaign suggested that it had been hacked by Iran.
According to SAEDNEWS, The campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris announced on Tuesday that it had been the target of foreign hackers, shortly after rival Donald Trump’s campaign suggested that it had been compromised by Iran.
According to a Harris campaign official speaking to AFP, the campaign's legal and security teams were informed by the FBI in July about a foreign actor influence operation aimed at them. “We have robust cybersecurity measures in place, and are not aware of any security breaches of our systems resulting from those efforts,” the official stated.
While the campaign did not specify which foreign entity was believed to have initiated the hacking attempt, it emphasized that they are maintaining communication with law enforcement agencies regarding the situation.
On Monday, the U.S. State Department issued a warning to Iran, indicating there would be consequences for any interference in the upcoming elections. This warning followed Trump’s campaign's claims that it had been hacked, with Trump’s team alleging that the breach involved the dissemination of internal documents, including information used to vet running mate JD Vance.
The Trump campaign urged media outlets not to reprint these documents, asserting that doing so would mean “doing the bidding of America’s enemies.” This approach contrasts sharply with Trump’s behavior during the 2016 election, when he publicly stated he hoped Russia would “find” Hillary Clinton’s emails, which many interpreted as an invitation for further hacking efforts against his opponent.
U.S. intelligence agencies have concluded that Russia intervened in the 2016 election to favor Trump, a claim the former president has consistently disputed. As the 2024 election season heats up, concerns over foreign interference are once again at the forefront of political discourse.
