Bloodshed at Evin: Iran Denounces Israeli “Symbolic Strike” as Crime Against Civilians

According to Saed News, on July 12, 2025, Judiciary Spokesman Asghar Jahangir forcefully rejected Israel’s justification for its June 23 air raid on Tehran’s Evin Prison. Despite Tel Aviv’s claim that the strike targeted “Iran’s machinery of oppression,” Jahangir confirmed that no Israeli spies were held at the facility, and all casualties were Iranian civilians, inmates’ families, and prison staff.

Precision Missiles in a Humanitarian Zone

At 10:30 AM—peak visiting hours—precision-guided missiles hit Evin’s medical center, visitation halls, and administrative offices. The result was catastrophic: staff, young military conscripts fulfilling mandatory service, visiting relatives, and nearby residents were martyred in what Jahangir described as “a wholesale crime against civilians.” He noted, “Even neighbors near the visitation hall were martyred. This reveals who truly threatens civilians in our region.”

Immediate Rescue and Reunification Efforts

Contrary to assertions that prisoners were unreachable, Jahangir detailed that judicial authorities provided phones immediately after the strike so inmates could contact their families. Secure buses then evacuated all prisoners to safety. While “an insignificant number” momentarily fled the chaos, most inmates voluntarily joined rescue operations, helping recover the bodies of martyrs and assisting officials.

Personal Tragedies Amid the Ashes

Among the 80 Iranians killed were:

  • Mehrangiz Imanpour, an artist and mother of two who lived near the prison. Her ex-husband, writer Reza Khandan-Mahabadi, mourned, “Mehrangiz was the beauty in my children’s lives.”

  • Hajar “Hasti” Mohammadi, a humanitarian volunteer who coordinated the release of debtors from prison. She died when debris collapsed the entrance to the visitation hall she staffed.

Eyewitness Accounts of Horror

Survivors recounted “apocalyptic scenes”:

“Three missiles hit the prison entrance. Families and plaintiffs seeking dispute resolution were covered in blood,” an inmate’s sister told Etemad. Her brother called her in terror: “People died before my eyes!”

A Wider Campaign of Aggression

The Evin strike was part of Israel’s 12-day campaign of aggression against Iran, which martyred over 1,060 Iranians, according to Saeed Ohadi of the Foundation of Martyrs and Veterans Affairs. Jahangir condemned the raid as “a terrorist attack on humanitarian spaces” and vowed Iran will hold the perpetrators accountable.
